If you’re new to surfing, picking a board that offers stability and makes catching waves easier is crucial. As a beginner, you’ll want to go for bigger boards that help you maintain balance and learn the basics of surfing.

Longboard

Longboards are long surfboards, typically measuring between 9 and 10 feet (2.7-3.0 m), and they are some of the most stable boards you can rent. Thanks to their large surface area, longboards are ideal for beginners because they make balancing and standing up on the board easier. They are also a great choice for smaller waves, which are often found on beaches like Las Canteras in Las Palmas.

La Cicer, known for its gentle and long waves, is an ideal place for longboarding, especially from June to October when the waves are less intense. During these months, the sea is calmer and the waves reach around 1-2 metres, making them ideal for learning to surf and for longer ‘carries’ on the waves. A longer board, such as a longboard, allows you to manoeuvre smoothly and catch smaller waves, which fits perfectly into these conditions. Autumn waves are gentle and conducive to long rides, making this period ideal for beginners and intermediates.

.Softboard

Softboards are foam boards, making them soft and safe for beginner surfers. These are the best option for those who are new to the sport because they reduce the risk of injury while still offering stability. Their forgiving nature helps beginners practice their technique safely on smaller waves.

In spring and summer, i.e. from March to August, the waves at Muellito are small, usually between 0.5 and 1.5 metres, making it ideal for beginners. In addition, during winter and spring you will find some days when the waves are favourable for softboarh learners. The soft waves during these months favour softboard practice, which forgives technical mistakes and minimises the risk of injury. Muellito offers calmer waters than La Cicer and the soft board is ideal for safely learning the basics of surfing, especially for those just starting out.

Funboard

Funboards are a middle ground between longboards and shortboards, usually measuring between 7 and 8 feet (2.1-2.4 m). Funboards provide a good balance between stability and maneuverability, making them a great choice for surfers who have mastered the basics and are ready to transition to more advanced surfing. This option is ideal for those looking to improve their technique without losing the stability of a larger board.

Funboards are great for both spots - both La Cicer and Muellito - especially from November to February, when the waves become more unpredictable and varied. In winter, the waves can reach greater heights (up to 2-3 metres) and the funboard allows for greater manoeuvrability while maintaining stability. It's an excellent choice for intermediate surfers who want to develop their skills in more challenging conditions, but are not yet ready for a shortboard.
